An Amanat (Arabic: أمانات) account is a commissary or canteen account for indentured persons in the custody of Altar Group. It is used to receive earned welfare contributions, deposits, and transfers. Any funds in the account can be spent on approved items, such as clothing, food, toiletries, hygiene products and medicines, at the Dormitory store.
The vast majority of the estimated 3,500 Inmate Prostitutes currently incarcerated in Altar's reformatory establishments have amanat accounts. These accounts are opened at the time of in-processing, and remain with the holder throughout their entire period of indenture, even if they are transferred between work units during this time. Most Inmate Prostitutes are eligible to receive welfare contributions into their amanat accounts, proportionate to their earnings. At some establishments, they may also be permitted to receive deposits or transfers from staff members. Transfers from external sources are not permitted.
According to Altar policy, funds in Inmate Prostitutes' amanat accounts may not be garnished or applied towards their debt balance, or subject to automatic deduction for the payment of legal, medical or administrative costs. Such liabilities must instead be added to the Inmate Prostitute's outstanding debt balance. At the time of an Inmate Prostitute's release from custody, any positive balance in her amanat account will be paid to her in cash.
Welfare Contributions
Most Inmate Prostitutes are eligible to earn welfare contributions into their amanat accounts. Welfare contributions are calculated based on a percentage of an Inmate Prostitute's earnings, but are paid in addition to her earnings.
