'''Indentured labor''' became legal in the United States in 2039. The primary legislation governing indenture is the Criminal Sentencing Reform Act (CSRA), which came into force on 1 March 2039. As a result of the CSRA, time-based sentences in federal prison were abolished, and all crimes instead became punishable by monetary fines. For certain felonies, courts have discretion to require a portion (ranging from 10% to 50%) of the fine to be paid by indentured labor. Between 2035 to 2044, various states enacted their own indenture laws, resulting in prison sentences being completely abolished across all 50 states.
